Walter Scott, Thomas Pringle and Abbotsford

Dr Malcolm Morrison
Abbotsford Tour Guide

A talk about objects in Abbotsford’s entrance hall, and about the man, Thomas, who sent them from Africa to Walter Scott in the 1820s. Pringle, born near Kelso in 1789, is, today, overlooked, despite being recognised as the “Father of South African Poetry”, a pioneer of a free press in South Africa, and a supporter of the abolition of slavery.
